Workshops

SUBMISSION DEADLINE:
27 APRIL 2017, 23:59 UTC/GMT (Workshops’ Proposals)
8 MAY 2017, 23:59 UTC/GMT (Workshops’ Proposals - Extended)
15 AUGUST 2017, 23:59 UTC/GMT (Workshops’ Papers)

SIGGRAPH Asia 2017 is now calling for paper submissions for workshops to be held in conjunction with the main conference. Workshops provide participants with the opportunity to present and discuss novel research ideas on active and emerging topics of computer graphics and interactive techniques. Each workshop should generate ideas that give the community a new, organized way of thinking about a specific topic, or ideas that suggest promising directions for future research. We particularly encourage the fostering of topics or communities that do not have a "home" in other venues. Arranging a workshop is an opportunity to move the existing field forward or to build a new community.

Workshops will take place on 27 November 2017, in The Bangkok International Trade and Exhibition Centre (BITEC) in Bangkok, Thailand. Two workshop formats will be available: half-day and full-day. Half-day workshops should be scheduled to have two 1.5-hour sessions, with one 15-minute break. Full-day workshops should be scheduled to have four 1.5-hour sessions, with a mid-morning break, a lunch break and a mid-afternoon break.

SIGGRAPH Asia 2017 is now calling for Paper Submissions to the following Workshops’ Topics which will be presented at the event.

What is a SIGGRAPH Asia Workshop?

Workshops are held the first day of SIGGRAPH Asia, Monday 27 November 2017, in the BITEC (Bangkok International Trade and Exhibition Centre, the main conference venue) in Bangkok, Thailand.

A workshop may be a half day or a full day in length:

  • Half-day workshops should be scheduled to have:
    • Two 1.5-hour sessions
    • One 15-minute break
    • Minimum of 5 presenters (selected through submitted and vetted position papers)
  • Full-day workshops should be scheduled to have:
    • Four 1.5-hour sessions
    • A mid-morning break, a lunch break and a mid-afternoon break
    • Minimum of 10 presenters (selected through submitted and vetted position papers)
  • Please note, all workshop presenters must be registered for a Basic conference pass

Workshops are intended to foster discussion and exchange ideas. Because focused interaction among presenters is important, presenters should have informed positions based on prior experience, as expressed in their position papers. Workshops should not be miniature paper presentation sessions, but focus on community building and communal knowledge creation. Please note that SIGGRAPH Asia workshops are not classes in which instructors teach content (see Should I offer a course or a workshop link for further guidance).

Some example workshops from previous years include:
Virtual Reality Meets Physical Reality: Modelling and Simulating Virtual Humans and Environments
Head-Up Display and their Applications
Haptic Media and Contents Design
Creative Shape Modeling and Design
Designing Tools for Crafting Interactive Artifacts
Design Fiction For Mixed-Reality Performances

Who organizes and presents at a Workshop?

There are two groups of people involved in a workshop: the organizers and the presenters. Organizers are responsible for the workshop’s topic, logistics, and final results delivery. Presenters are responsible for the content and discussion. And anyone attending SIGGRAPH Asia on a Basic conference pass is welcome to attend any of the Workshops.

Preparing and Submitting your Workshop Proposal

Your workshop submission must be prepared and submitted according to the stipulations below. Please review and carefully follow the submission requirements, as incomplete or wrongly completed submissions will not be considered.

Workshop Selection Process

Workshop proposals will be reviewed by a jury of academic and industry professionals (the Workshops Chair, in collaboration with their Workshops Committee). Acceptance decisions will be based on an assessment of how compelling the workshop is likely to be for SIGGRAPH Asia attendees.

The Workshops Chair and his Committee will consider several factors during the selection process, including:

  • The potential for the topic of the workshop to generate stimulating discussions and useful results. The organizer’s ability to demonstrate in the proposal a well-organized process and plan for the workshop that fosters interactivity.
  • The overall balance of topics in the Workshops program and relevance to the main conference theme.
  • The proposed size of the workshop. Whether there is a clear and workable plan for facilitating a lively environment for discussion for all presenters, particularly for larger workshops.
  • If multiple submissions are received on the same or similar topics, the organizers may be encouraged to merge them or differentiate them.

Submissions should not contain sensitive, private, or proprietary information that cannot be disclosed at the conference.

Upon Acceptance of your SIGGRAPH Asia Workshop

Please note the following milestones which must be met for all SIGGRAPH Asia Workshops:

  • Workshop organizers will be notified of acceptance or rejection by 11 May 2017, 23:59 UTC/GMT.
    • Once your proposal is accepted, you will receive a link via email to the appropriate form for your contribution. You will be required to prepare the final print-ready file following the specifications in the acceptance notification.
    • Please note: The schedule to provide your final material after receiving the acceptance notification is tight. Please plan your personal schedule accordingly.
  • Workshop organizers will have until 2 June 2017, 23:59 UTC/GMT to submit their final workshop descriptions and publicize their Calls for Participation.

Before the Conference

In addition, workshop organizers will be responsible for the following tasks during the time leading up to the conference:

  • Publicize Your Workshop: Organizers of an accepted workshop must set up and maintain their own website in which they provide further and updated information about their workshop. The workshop page will be linked to from the official SIGGRAPH Asia Workshops page. In order to have a successful and well-attended workshop, we recommend that you post your call for participation early and widely (e.g. publicize on social media and on relevant mailing lists).
  • Solicit Position Papers from Potential Presenters: a position paper is generally 2-4 pages long and outlines the submitter's view on the workshop theme and the reasons for the submitter's interest in the topic. The deadline for any presenter to submit a position paper should be no later than 15 August 2017, 23:59 UTC/GMT.
  • Select Presenters: Choose presenters on the basis of position papers submitted to you and your goals for the workshop:
    • Workshop position paper submissions should be received no later than 15 August 2017, 23:59 UTC/GMT.
    • Early Acceptances: Workshop organizers must complete an early acceptance round for position papers by 8 August 2017, 23:59 UTC/GMT.
    • Final Acceptances for position papers must be completed by 21 August 2017, 23:59 UTC/GMT.
  • Provide a Presenter List: A list of confirmed presenters should be sent to the Workshops Chair by 31 October 2017, 23:59 UTC/GMT.
    • Any Workshops that do not attract the minimum number of presenters (5, for half-day workshops, 10 for full day workshops) may have to be cancelled by the Workshops Chair.
  • Ensure that at least one Presenter of each Accepted Workshops Paper is registered for a Basic conference pass by 29 September 2017, 23:59 UTC/GMT.
  • Distribute Position Papers and Pre-Workshop Materials: Materials should be made accessible to presenters well in advance of the workshop.
  • Develop a final agenda of workshop activities.
  • Develop a plan for any follow-up activities.

At the Conference

The workshop organizers are expected to facilitate discussion, help maintain productive interaction, and encourage participation. The emphasis should be on group discussion, rather than on presentation of individual position papers. Diversity of perspectives should be encouraged.

After the Conference

We require that workshop organizers share their ideas, discussions, and results in a format of your choice (e.g., journal paper, poster, blog post). A link to this must be sent to the Workshops Chair.

We encourage additional avenues of communication, such as organizing an informal Special Interest Group (SIG) at the conference, preparing an edited book or special issues of journals following the conference, or maintaining a website or email list to network with others who might be interested.

Educator's Resources Submission option

Those submitting content to a SIGGRAPH conference have the option of donating materials of educational value to ACM SIGGRAPH online resources for the benefit of the education community. Learn more.

For more information about uploading files for your submission, please see Uploading Files.

Evaluation

All submissions will be reviewed by a jury of academic and industry professionals. The workshops Committee Members are responsible for conducting the jury process in order to set up a high-quality program, with exciting oral sessions.

Notice To Contributors

All contributors to SIGGRAPH Asia Annual Conferences are now required to use ACM's rights management system to grant rights to publish accepted content rather than through the online submission system. Essentially, submission tracking, jury review, and acceptance remain the same, but now the rights management is through ACM, the parent organization of SIGGRAPH Asia.

You will be asked to complete an ACM rights management form, which includes permission to record and distribute the audio and video of your recorded presentation through official channels of ACM/SIGGRAPH Asia. For most content types, this will be a Permission and Release form, which allows authors to retain copyright.

More Information on these options (the FAQ is particularly useful)

As a contributor to an ACM-sponsored event, the following expectations apply to you, should your content be accepted for presentation:

  • You have the permission to use everything that is in your presentation. This includes securing permission to use third-party material, and providing documentation of that permission to ACM. (More information on the proper use of third-party material in your presentation)
  • If you are using copyrighted musical compositions in your presentation, you must secure performing rights licenses.
  • You must have the authority to grant ACM the right to distribute your presentation.

Once your contribution is accepted, you will receive a link via email to the appropriate form for your contribution.
