Symposium on Visualization (SA17VIS) will be held in Bangkok, Thailand during 27 – 30 November 2017. Visualization has become an increasingly important research area due to its wide range of applications in many disciplines. SA17 VIS is a follow-up of the first Symposium on Visualization in High Performance Computing of SIGGRAPH ASIA 2015, and the second Symposium on Visualization of SIGGRAPH ASIA 2016. SA17VIS is designed to be an ACM sponsored international visualization symposium held in the Asia-Pacific region, with the objective to foster greater exchange between researchers and practitioners, and to draw more researchers in the Asia-Pacific region to enter this rapidly growing area.

SA17VIS aims to provide a visualization-focused forum for visualization and graphics practitioners, welcoming all areas of visualization research: information visualization, scientific visualization, and visual analytics. Authors are invited to submit original and unpublished research and practical applications in all areas of visualization. Especially, we encourage papers in any new, novel, and exciting research area that pertains to the mixing of visualization and graphics, and cutting-edge techniques for big data visualization.

All submitted papers will go through a review process to guarantee the publication of high-quality papers. All papers accepted by ACM SIGGRAPH ASIA Symposium on Visualization will be documented in the SIGGRAPH Asia website and published in ACM Digital Library.

Selected research papers of outstanding quality will be invited to submit an extended version to Journal of Computer Graphics Forum.

Presenters are expected to cover their own travel costs, which are not covered by SIGGRAPH Asia. One contributor per accepted Paper has to register with a Basic Conference or Full Conference registration in order for the work to be published and presented at SIGGRAPH Asia.

Topics: The symposium welcomes submissions for all areas of visualization (information visualization, scientific visualization, and visual analytics).

The topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Non-spatial data visualization (networks, hierarchies, text, high-dimensional data)
  • Spatial data visualization (scalar, vector, or tensor fields, multi-field data)
  • Visual analytics and visual data science
  • Interaction for visualization (interaction techniques, mixed graphics and visualization)
  • Big data and large-scale visualization
  • Evaluation (quantitative and qualitative evaluation, usability studies, laboratory studies, fields studies, eye tracking, metrics and quantification)
  • Visualization systems
  • Theory of visualization and models
  • Applications of visualization (cyber-physical-social space data, bioinformatics and life sciences, physical sciences and engineering, geospatial sciences, software engineering social sciences, humanities, visualization in visualization research)

How To Submit

  • Select "Begin a New Submission"
  • Select "Create" for the Symposium on Visualization submission form

Please review and carefully follow the submission requirements below. Incomplete or wrongly completed submissions will not be considered. Instructions will guide you to a successful completion. When you begin the form, your submission will be assigned a unique submission ID number that will identify your submission throughout the entire review and production process. We strongly encourage starting the submission form well before the deadline. Submit your work before the submission deadline 29 JUNE 2017, 23:59 UTC/GMT. All forms must be completed, and all materials must be successfully uploaded by that time. The submission deadline will be strictly enforced. Please do not wait until the last minute to upload your files.

Dual Submissions

The Symposium on Visualization is dedicated to presenting new, unpublished work. Work that is under review elsewhere (for example, to a journal or another conference) cannot be submitted to the program. Such dual submissions are considered unethical.

Submission

Your submission must include the following materials and information:

  • A maximal eight-page paper (the 8th page may only contain references) formatted according to the SIGGRAPH template for Technical Papers (two-column ACM format), should explain your contribution, emphasize what is novel about it, and explain the concept or the technique, using appropriate figures, tables, results, and references. Prepare the document with the submission ID number alongside the printed title. The reviewing process is double-blind. Therefore, the paper should not include the names of author on the work and their institutions, since the reviewing process is double-blind. In all other ways, the document must be in the final format. Submissions that are more than the page limit or that are improperly formatted will not be considered.

  • One representative image (JPG) suitable for use on the conference web site and promotional materials: All submissions shall include a representative digital image that shall be of the highest print quality possible or the highest possible screen grab. Images must be submitted in JPG format.
  • Supplementary materials (OPTIONAL): All submitters are encouraged to provide a video showcasing their projects when available (this is especially interesting for contest submissions). The video may be uploaded in one or more separate files. We can only accommodate videos in QuickTime, MPEG-4, or DivX Version 5 (or later) formats. The total length of the video should not exceed five minutes. Remember that the total size of all uploaded files should not exceed 100 MB.

Educator's Resources Submission option

Copyright Permissions

All materials presented at SIGGRAPH Asia and published in SIGGRAPH publications must have appropriate permissions from any copyright holders or holders of other rights. It is crucial that presenters either own or receive the appropriate permissions before presentation. Work that you perform for third parties, such as images created for a film, or research done in a corporate laboratory, may have restrictions on its use. It is the responsibility of the presenter to know what permissions may be necessary, and to obtain them.

The accepted papers would be published by ACM and made available in the conference proceedings. The extended versions of the best papers will be published by Journal of Computer Graphics Forum and must add 30% new materials and should reference the original paper, and the copyright of the new work will be held by Wiley.

Evaluation

All submissions will be reviewed by a jury of expert reviewers. The Paper Co-Chairs and members of the International Program Committee are responsible for conducting the jury process. All submitted papers will go through a review process that guarantees the publication of high-quality papers. We are adopting double-blind reviewing, i.e., please make sure that the submitted paper does not include the names of author(s) and their institutions.

Submitting authors should learn the results of the review process in August 2017.

Notice To Contributors

All contributors to SIGGRAPH Asia Annual Conferences are now required to use ACM's rights management system to grant rights to publish accepted content rather than through the online submission system. Essentially, submission tracking, jury review, and acceptance remain the same, but now the rights management is through ACM, the parent organization of SIGGRAPH Asia.

You will be asked to complete an ACM rights management form, which includes permission to record and distribute the audio and video of your recorded presentation through official channels of ACM/SIGGRAPH Asia. For most content types, this will be a Permission and Release form, which allows authors to retain copyright.

As a contributor to an ACM-sponsored event, the following expectations apply to you, should your content be accepted for presentation:

  • You have the permission to use everything that is in your presentation. This includes securing permission to use third-party material, and providing documentation of that permission to ACM. (More information on the proper use of third-party material in your presentation)
  • If you are using copyrighted musical compositions in your presentation, you must secure performing rights licenses.
  • You must have the authority to grant ACM the right to distribute your presentation.

Once your contribution is accepted, you will receive a link via email to the appropriate form for your contribution.

Upon Acceptance

If your work is accepted, you will be required to prepare the final print-ready file following the specifications in the acceptance notification (two to eight pages, depending on submission type).

Please note: The schedule to provide your final material after receiving the acceptance notification is tight. Please plan your schedule accordingly.

Detailed information and instructions as well as deadlines will be sent to submitters along with the acceptance letter. Closer to the event, the organizers will confirm the schedule on your presentation.

For instructions about preparation and delivery of your final content for publications, please carefully follow the instructions in the acceptance letter.

You will be notified of acceptance or rejection August 2017, 23:59 UTC/GMT.

After acceptance, the SIGGRAPH Asia Information System will allow you to update basic information about your work and upload any final materials for inclusion on the conference program and web site. This information needs to be finalized two weeks after acceptance.

Be prepared to deliver your final versions of your work before these dates, or your acceptance may be rescinded.

The time and location of your presentation will be posted on the SIGGRAPH Asia website well in advance of the conference.

Some registration and travel costs to attend SIGGRAPH Asia 2017 may be at your own expense; each accepted submission receives recognition as specified in the SIGGRAPH Asia Recognition Policy.

What is the submission deadline?

The proposal submission deadline is on 29 JUNE 2017, 23:59 UTC/GMT. Double-check the submission date and time for your region basing yourself on 29 JUNE 2017, 23:59 UTC/GMT deadline.

Can I submit after the deadline?

No. The deadline is absolute. All submissions receive equal consideration up to the published deadline. Please respect other contributors and allow time for unforeseen circumstances in your submission, including (but not limited to) network connectivity, equipment failures, job impacts, life or family events, etc. These personal circumstances are outside of SIGGRAPH Asia direct control and cannot be accommodated fairly.

Why is this so absolute?

Primarily, the answer is fairness and equal opportunity for consideration. This respects the contribution process for all submissions. Secondly, the deadlines were designed to maximize submission development and quality for all contributors, including those contributing to other SIGGRAPH Asia programs. Submission deadlines are set as late as possible, but they must also support quality in review, production, and delivery at SIGGRAPH Asia.

Are partial or incomplete submissions considered?

Incomplete submissions are not guaranteed a review. Contributors are required to minimally meet all submission requirements by the published deadline. The Committee will evaluate the merit of each completed proposal as it was submitted at the deadline even if it does not meet the author's personal quality objectives. Please allow yourself enough time to meet your own quality goals.

How will SIGGRAPH Asia address network failures?

SIGGRAPH Asia is only responsible for the availability of the submission server. If the Symposium on Visualization Chair is notified of a hardware or service failure in the submission system, he/she will authorize an appropriate adjustment (and will prominently post notices at several locations). All other network failures between your location and the SIGGRAPH server will not affect the submission deadline. Please submit early to avoid connectivity-support problems or last-minute submission-server performance issues.
