How To Submit

• Log in to the SIGGRAPH Information System
• Select "Begin a New Submission"
• Select "Create" for the Symposium on Education submission form

The submission form, paper and abstract are due on 22 JUNE 2017, 23:59 UTC/GMT.

All submissions to the Symposium on Education must be completed using the following submission manuscript formats:

• Education Papers: Paper of 5 to 8 Pages
• Education Talks: Abstract of up to 2 pages in the ACM document format
• Education Workshops: Abstract of up to 2 pages in the ACM document format and supplemental document including detailed workshop plan.

Please indicate in the submission form which category is most appropriate for your presentation.

Use the checklist below to ensure that your submission is complete and meets all applicable program requirements.

Please review and carefully follow the submission requirements below. Incomplete or wrongly completed submissions will not be considered. When you begin the form, your submission will be assigned with submission identification (ID) number that will be used to identify your submission throughout the review process. You can modify the form up until the deadline. If required information is missing, your form will be marked Incomplete. Incomplete submissions will not be reviewed or accepted.

For supplemental submission materials, please use the file upload form in the submission system. If you need to submit physical materials please contact the Symposium on Education Chair.

For an Education Workshop Submission

An abstract and other supporting documentation or examples are sufficient for the jury process. The abstract should be in the ACM format. Please put the title and presenter(s) on the first page of the abstract document to be uploaded. Detailed information on the workshop must be submitted with the abstract. Please see “For All Submissions” (below) for additional requirements.

For All Submissions

Your paper and abstract must be submitted in PDF and must include the following addition to the materials listed above:

• Your submission category (Education Papers, Education Talks, Education Workshops)
• Include name(s) of the speaker(s) and a list of all collaborators, their affiliations, and contact information: email address (required), address, work phone, home phone (optional). Indicate the primary contact if there are multiple presenters.
• OPTIONAL: Use the English Review Service to help with the text of your submission.
• The publication format for the Symposium on Education is the same as for the annual SIGGRAPH conference. Authors must prepare their papers and abstracts according to the ACM SIGGRAPH publication guidelines.

Use these instructions to ensure that your submission is complete and that it meets all applicable program requirements. Please ensure that your proposal is relevant to the goals and subject matter of the Symposium on Education. In particular, your proposal should have a well-defined educational goal and identify a specific set of skills or knowledge that you aim to communicate. If your proposal does not fulfill the criteria outlined by the Symposium on Education, it might be referred to another program offered by SIGGRAPH Asia 2017.

It is extremely important that you fill out the Online Submission Form as completely as possible. Since your proposal is judged on the items you submit in the online form, it is in your best interest to provide as much relevant information as you can.

We strongly encourage starting the submission form well before the deadline. Submit your work before the submission deadline 13 JUNE 2017, 23:59 UTC/GMT. All forms must be completed, and all materials must be successfully uploaded by that time. The submission deadline will be strictly enforced. Please do not wait until the last minute to upload your files.

English Review Service

If English is not your first language; you may use the English Review Service to help with the text of submissions. Please note that this takes time, so your submission should be sent to the English Review Service well before the final deadline.

Those submitting content to a SIGGRAPH conference have the option of donating materials of educational value to ACM SIGGRAPH online resources for the benefit of the education community. Learn more.

Evaluation

Each proposal is extensively reviewed by peers from the SIGGRAPH Asia community. Reviewers are chosen for their familiarity with the content of the proposal. Education papers will be evaluated by program committee members and external reviewers.

Each paper will be distributed to three or more experts for peer review. However, if the committee determines that a submission has either been previously published, or is off topic, not related to education and computer graphics/interactive technology, incomplete, or otherwise unsuitable for publication, the submission will be rejected without detailed review.

Submitters will be notified the review result in August 2017.
Evaluation is based on content, clarity, appropriateness, and innovation in teaching computer graphics / interactive technology or the use of computer graphics / interactive techniques in teaching and learning. A large part of the review process is deciding if the work fits into our vision for the Symposium on Education and the SIGGRAPH Asia conference. If your work is not accepted, that is not necessarily a reflection on its quality. Papers and abstracts should contain sufficient detail to assure reviewers that your work is high quality, innovative, inspiring, and of interest to attendees.

Following the committee decision, email notification of acceptance, conditional acceptance or rejection status will be sent to the author, who will then be granted access to the written reviews and scores. Conditionally accepted papers undergo a second reviewing process, in which a referee (a member of the Symposium on Education Committee) verifies that the final version of the paper is acceptable (that any required changes have been made, and that other changes made by the authors, perhaps in response to reviewer comments, have not compromised the paper in any way). This second and final stage determines the final acceptance status of all papers and abstracts. The referees' decisions are final. Papers and abstracts that do not satisfy the referee in the second stage of reviewing and/or that are not uploaded in final form by the final deadline, together with the original or revised versions of the submitted supplementary material, will be rejected.

In order to create the most worthwhile experience for our presenters and attendees, the jury may ask a presenter to convert a submission to a different presentation format. For example, multiple submissions on the same or similar topics, or submissions with opposing points of view may be combined together into a Panel format. This type of change is not a reflection on the quality of the submission, but motivated only by our desire to present the best possible program. The SIGGRAPH Asia 2017 Symposium on Education committee also reserves the right to alter the length of each time slot based on content and in order to better balance the schedule.

Notice To Contributors

All contributors to SIGGRAPH Asia Annual Conferences are now required to use ACM's rights management system to grant rights to publish accepted content rather than through the online submission system. Essentially, submission tracking, jury review, and acceptance remain the same, but now the rights management is through ACM, the parent organization of SIGGRAPH Asia.

You will be asked to complete an ACM rights management form, which includes permission to record and distribute the audio and video of your recorded presentation through official channels of ACM/SIGGRAPH Asia. For most content types, this will be a Permission and Release form, which allows authors to retain copyright.

As a contributor to an ACM-sponsored event, the following expectations apply to you, should your content be accepted for presentation:

• You have the permission to use everything that is in your presentation. This includes securing permission to use third-party material, and providing documentation of that permission to ACM. (More information on the proper use of third-party material in your presentation)
• If you are using copyrighted musical compositions in your presentation, you must secure performing rights licenses.
• You must have the authority to grant ACM the right to distribute your presentation.

Once your contribution is accepted, you will receive a link via email to the appropriate form for your contribution.

Detailed information and instructions as well as deadlines will be sent to submitters along with the acceptance letter. Closer to the event, the organizers will confirm the schedule, and any presentation, workshop or exhibit needs.

For instructions about preparation and delivery of your final content for publications, please carefully follow the instructions in the acceptance letter.

You will be notified of acceptance or rejection in Mid-August 2017.

Accepted content will be presented at SIGGRAPH Asia and documented on the SIGGRAPH Asia 2017 website and the ACM Digital Library.

The complete list of the Symposium on Education presentations will be available in October 2017.

After acceptance, the SIGGRAPH Information System will allow you to update basic information about your work and upload any final materials for inclusion on the conference program and web site. You must provide a final, edited, camera-ready documentation by 10 September 2017, 23:59 UTC/GMT.

Be prepared to deliver your final versions of your work before these dates, or your acceptance may be rescinded.

The time and location of your presentation will be posted on the SIGGRAPH Asia website well in advance of the conference.

Some registration and travel costs to attend SIGGRAPH Asia may be at your own expense; each acceptance receives recognition as specified in the SIGGRAPH Asia Recognition Policy.

Change of author list after the initial submission, including adding, deleting and rearranging the order of names, must be approved by the symposium chairs. The request of change must be in writing to the chairs of the symposium and explain the reason for the change and show agreement from the all authors on the list, please email us at: This email address is being protected from spambots. Publication

All accepted work will be documented in the SIGGRAPH Asia website and distributed through the ACM Digital Library.

Presenter and Contributor Recognition

Presenters / Contributors of each accepted submission have to register for at least one conference pass. Please visit our registration page to view the various registration categories for each program.

Please see the Recognition Policy for a summary of what you will receive if your work and/or proposal are accepted by SIGGRAPH Asia.

Presenters are expected to cover their own travel costs, which are not covered by SIGGRAPH Asia.

You can apply for a 25% discount per accepted submission in the submission system, one presenter per accepted submission. Presenters / Contributors of each accepted submission have to register for at least one Basic conference pass.

Once your contribution is accepted, you will receive a link via email to the appropriate form for your contribution. You will be required to prepare the final print-ready file following the specifications in the acceptance notification.

You will be able to update your basic submission information and any final materials so that it can be included in the conference program and web site. What is the submission deadline?

Can I submit after the deadline?

No. The deadline is absolute. All submissions receive equal consideration up to the published deadline. Please respect other contributors and allow time for unforeseen circumstances in your submission, including (but not limited to) network connectivity, equipment failures, job impacts, life or family events, etc. These personal circumstances are outside of SIGGRAPH Asia direct control and cannot be accommodated fairly.

Why is this so absolute?

Primarily, the answer is fairness and equal opportunity for consideration. This respects the contribution process for all submissions. Secondly, the deadlines were designed to maximize submission development and quality for all contributors, including those contributing to other SIGGRAPH Asia programs. Submission deadlines are set as late as possible, but they must also support quality in review, production, and delivery at SIGGRAPH Asia.

Are partial or incomplete submissions considered?

Incomplete submissions are not guaranteed a review. Contributors are required to minimally meet all submission requirements by the published deadline. The Committee will evaluate the merit of each completed proposal as it was submitted at the deadline even if it does not meet the author's personal quality objectives. Please allow yourself enough time to meet your own quality goals.

How will SIGGRAPH Asia address network failures?

SIGGRAPH Asia is only responsible for the availability of the submission server. If the Symposium on Education Chair is notified of a hardware or service failure in the submission system, he/she will authorize an appropriate adjustment (and will prominently post notices at several locations). All other network failures between your location and the SIGGRAPH server will not affect the submission deadline. Please submit early to avoid connectivity-support problems or last-minute submission-server performance issues.

Submissions

Is there a difference between the Technical Papers and a paper in the Symposium on Education?

Yes, they are different programs and have separate submission criteria.

Can I submit after the deadline?

No. The deadline is absolute.

Can I change the files I uploaded to the submission system?

You can change and update your submission information and files on the submission system until the deadline. We encourage you to create an account and start submission process early.

My company sells educational software. Can we make a sales presentation?

No. The Exhibition is the best place for that.

English is not my first language. Can I get help to improve the text in my paper?

SIGGRAPH Asia provides an English Review Service for authors who are not native English speakers.

Can I still use English Review Service if I apply just before the deadline?

The English Review Service makes no guarantees about turnaround. For the best chance of having your submission reviewed by this service, please ensure that you complete your submission at least 14 days before the deadline.

I teach primary-school students, but I am not an expert in computer graphics. I have designed something using computer graphics, software, interactive techniques, games, etc. that really helps my students understand a concept (math, English, dance, etc.). Should I submit?

Yes. It may be appropriate for a paper or talk.

There's an illustration in my paper that I got from the Internet. Is that okay?

If your content contains material copyrighted by someone else, you must obtain permission to use that material from the copyright holder. Examples of this include, but are not limited to, images, video clips, sounds, and articles published in other media. Obtaining this permission to use may take some time, and may involve paying a licensing fee to the holder of copyright.

Can I submit work that I've published or presented, or has been accepted for publication or presentation, elsewhere?

Yes, though with some caveats. First, you must indicate the prior appearance via the checkbox on the submission form and provide a description of how and where the work appeared. Second, be aware that SIGGRAPH Asia attendees expect to see things they've never seen before. The jury will decide if the novelty and impact of the submission warrant acceptance despite its appearance elsewhere. Generally speaking, it's OK if your work has been presented in a small workshop or colloquium, and it's OK if your work has been published in journals in other fields. However, work that has appeared in a major computer graphics journal or a mainstream computer graphics conference should not be submitted.

Can I submit work that was presented at a previous SIGGRAPH or SIGGRAPH Asia conference?

The submission form has a checkbox that requires you to indicate this fact. The jury will decide if the novelty of the submission warrants acceptance regardless of prior presentation or publication. Submissions in most formats require novelty and will not be accepted unless the work has progressed since last time. However, Workshops and Panels may remain valuable from year to year and will be considered by the jury, but proposals should clearly offer compelling reasons for repetition.

Do you support anything other than Portable Document Format (PDF)? It is easier for me to provide files in (your file type here). Everyone can read those, right?

No, please submit in PDF format. Reviewers come from many backgrounds and use many operating systems (Windows, Mac OS, Linux, etc.). PDF provides easy standardization (universal viewer support, graphics, embedded fonts, etc.) for both the reviewer and the proposer (for example, it preserves intentional formatting by the submitter). Even ASCII clear text is not "universal" due to carriage-return differences, column widths, lack of graphics, etc. While we are unable to provide document conversion software that generates PDF output, please note that many websites provide such services. Keying in the following keywords: "online word to pdf converter" in any major search engine's search box will give you a list of such services.

What are good-quality presentation notes?

Think of your notes as being the textbook chapters that you summarize in your presentation. Good quality notes are any combination of materials (text, images, video, source code, demos, etc.) that can assist people during your presentation and beyond the scope of the auditorium. Copies of the slides, images, and videos used during the presentation are common, but by themselves are not enough. They should be annotated with additional detailed explanations of complex concepts, elaborations on related topics that cannot fit into the time of the presentation, mathematical derivations, etc. Clear examples, tutorials, explanation of techniques, annotations from your experience, and program source code, for example, are always appreciated by the attendees. This material should help attendees accurately understand your presentation and build a useful context for application of what they have learned. Please refer to the Courses' sample Course Notes that help gauge what would be a quality set of notes for your presentation Notes.

Our presentation notes are completely done. Should we put them all in the download area as part of our submission?

No. A representative sampling of the quality of your notes is all that is required. Complete sets can overwhelm and complicate the review process. It is better to show a subsection that demonstrates detail, annotation, and supplemental materials than provide the entire set.

Can I submit additional materials (audio, video, animations, etc.) with my submission?

While we only accept a sample PDF of the notes to be submitted with your proposal, you are encouraged to include a list of additional materials with your proposal. If you have samples of materials available for consideration with your proposal, please provide a reference (for example, a URL) to their location.

I can't afford to come all the way to Bangkok for the conference. Will SIGGRAPH Asia pay for a part of my travel expenses?

We are unable to support your travel or hotel accommodation or any other related travel expenses. Please see the Presenter Recognition Policy for more details.

I have a great idea for a presentation, but I'm not sure if it's appropriate (too basic, advanced, fuzzy, etc.) for your program.
